Motor Starting Studies - Oil Platform

Oil & Gas Operator / North Sea

Assessment of HV motor starting with Temporary Generation.

The client requested that Arc Flash Safety confirm feasibility of starting a large HV motor during TAR operations when only Temporary Generation and existing Emergency Generators will be operational.

The detailed electrical model of the induction motor and driven load was prepared for the study and several scenarios considered. The studies revealed that it would not be possible to start this motor with the generation available due to the reactive power demand during direct-on-line start. Alternative scenarios were considered including increased number of Temporary Generators, load shedding and adjusting the tap settings to allow successful start of the motor.

In the end the combination of the above solutions allowed motor to be started on the system.
